It came out to mixed reviews and tepid box office numbers, but Woody Allen’s “Cassandra’s Dream” (2007) deserved better.
Much better.
Well-written and directed — and beautifully acted -– the neo noir thriller stars Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell as star-crossed, working class brothers in London.
McGregor plays the smart brother, who toils in his father’s money-losing restaurant while dreaming of a bigger life and chasing a woman out of his league. Farrell’s brother is a sensitive grease monkey/compulsive gambler who finds himself dangerously deep in debt.
When a rich uncle (Tom Wilkinson) asks for their help, it promises a way out for both brothers -– but at a terrible price.

NBC’s online sci-fi series ‘Gemini Division’ launched today on SciFi.com, NBC.com and a few other outlets.
My first-blush reaction after watching two episodes — meh.
The series, which is toplined by ‘Sin City’ siren Rosario Dawson, is set “five minutes” in the future (although it will take Microsoft a bit longer than that to deliver the nifty iPhone rip-off through which Dawson monologues her “transmissions” — a product placement, which gets to be a little intrusive by the second episode.)

If you’re like me, you read all day long on your computer — but don’t seem to have enough time to read all the books you want to get to.
Enter DailyLit.com, a new (to us) Web site that delivers bite-sized portions of books via e-mail or RSS on a regular schedule so you can get your reading done in five-minute chunks.
There are a slew of free books — and some paid books — to choose from. The total library just hit the 1,000 mark. So far they have 46 books categorized as sci-fi, which isn’t shabby. There are only three crime and four horror titles now, but I have a hunch those numbers will grow.
Pretty cool.
